Misdemeanor Crimes

Under Tennessee Law, misdemeanors are crimes that are characterized by potential incarceration of up to 11 months and 29 days in jail; however, most people convicted of crimes do not end up serving this full amount and many serve only probation.

Why hire a Tennessee Attorney
for a Misdemeanor?

Although misdemeanors are considered less serious than felonies (which are characterized by potential incarceration of 1 year or more), they can be almost as devasting to one’s permanent criminal record. Therefore, it is important to hire Tennessee attorney experienced in handling misdemeanor cases.

Misconceptions about Misdemeanors

Many believe that they will just go to court on what they believe is a minor charge and “get probation.” Although this is often the case, “getting probation” can lead to a permanent entry on one’s criminal history that can never be erased. Because of this, it is vital to hire at least call and discuss your misdemeanor charge with a Tennessee lawyer who is experienced in handling these charges before you jeopardized your future plans for employment, school or other options that may be closed to you by the poor or inexperienced handling of your misdemeanor crime or misdemeanor charge.

Consequences

For most people misdemeanor charges will not result in jail time. However, in many cases, particularly those who have been in trouble with the law before, may face jail time. In either case, contact an attorney immediately to explore your options rather than be surprised by on the day you have court or down the road when your misdemeanor charge shows up on a background check.
