Study confirms higher rates of crashes for teen drivers

There are few moments that are more exciting in a young Knoxville resident's life than the day he or she gets a driver's license. This may also be a moment feared by many parents, as teenagers have a reputation for unsafe driving. It turns out these fears may be well founded, according to a new study from AAA.

The study examined a number of crashes involving teen drivers, and found that young drivers were a danger to everyone on the road. About 3,000 people were killed in these crashes in 2013, with another 400,000 injured. The study revealed that a number of these people who were killed or injured were someone other than the teen driver.

The data also confirmed that crash rates were higher for teenagers than any other age group. This was due to a number of factors, including lack of experience and recent phenomenon such as texting and driving. In fact, about 6 out of 10 moderate to severe crashes involving teenagers are caused by distracted driving according to AAA, which is much higher than previously suggested in other studies.

Accordingly, there are certainly some fears that appear to be supported by the study. At the same time, however, each car accident should be considered on its own facts, at least when it comes to a personal injury lawsuit. An injured person will still need to show the other driver's liability, regardless of the other driver's age or stereotypes that may exist.

The age of the driver involved may raise some suspicions as to whether texting and driving or other forms of distracted driving were involved, and these suspicions should be investigated to determine whether they played a part in the crash. This remains true in every crash, as anything that will help show the other driver's negligence should be pursued vigorously.
