How can I avoid slip-and-fall accidents?

One type of accident that you may encounter in Knoxville on any given day is a slip-and-fall. Slip, trip and fall accidents are so common that they affect people of all ages. They can occur in your home, at the store, at work or on someone’s property. All it takes is for you to stumble and trip over a misplaced item, broken sidewalk or piece of buckled carpet for you to end up with injuries ranging from minor scrapes and bruises to broken bones, fractures and even a concussion.

Here are some steps you can take to minimize your risk of trips, falls and injuries.

Observe your surroundings

You are more likely to trip over an item if you do not know it is in your way. Whether you are at work, the mall or in a hotel, you should carefully observe your surroundings so you can spot potential hazards and do your best to avoid them. Sometimes even after careful observation, there may still be some dangers in your environment that can cause you to fall and hurt yourself. Some of those issues include wet surfaces, uneven floors, damaged steps and debris and objects in the walkway.

Consider your medical condition

Certain medical conditions, preexisting injuries and old age can affect your ability to maneuver safely around common slip-and-fall hazards. If you are over the age of 65 or suffer from certain medical conditions, you are more likely to trip and fall or sustain more severe injuries. You should always pay close attention to pathways and areas that are especially prone to slip-and-fall accidents. Exercise extreme caution when you are in such places and use any available safety railings, handles and devices to keep your balance so you do not sustain injuries.

Sometimes it is not possible to prevent a slip-and-fall from occurring. However, it is possible for you to minimize the impact of your injuries by seeking out medical attention immediately after your fall. If you are dealing with the aftermath of a slip-and-fall accident that has left you injured, you should seek guidance from an attorney.
